Where can I learn the guitar in Darlington?
How do we get started on the guitar?
You've done the hard part already by mentally making the commitment to wanting to play an instrument. You'll have fears about whether you have the natural ability, if you have the time, are you to old or to young? Do I need lessons with a teacher or can I get by on the internet? Do i buy an acoustic or electric? You'll probably have a load of other questions too.
I'll try to answer most of the common questions below.
Q. Do I need musical talent?
A. If you take a look at your record collection you"ll find lots of musicians on there who've all asked the same question. You"ll also find a myriad of styles even within a specific genre of music.
The beautiful thing about modern music is that everybody can have there own unique voice.
Bob Dylan, the Edge, Slash etc, they all sound like themselves and there personalities shine through.
If you pick up the guitar and make a commitment the same thing will happen to you. We're not talking about been a great technically gifted guitar player but someone on a never ending journey of learning to express themselves on an instrument. Music is not a sport.
Q. Do I have the time?
How long is a piece of string? In the early stages you only really need to commit to 20 mins a day practicing the essentials.
Muscle memory needs to kick in so short intense practice is better than hrs of directionless practice where you will get bored. You actually keep learning when you haven't got a guitar in your hands and when your asleep.
The GT guitar lessons are 1/2 an hr which will give you enough material practice and you will find your not overwhelmed which leads to quitting.
A. Do I need a teacher?
A. A teacher can't wave a magic wand but can guide you, give you the correct material to practice and help motivate you to reach your goals. It's a bit of a mine field with all the information available but a teacher can help you navigate a path through all the books, internet lessons and give you a structured practice plan and learning materials to give you the best chance.
Q. Acoustic or electric?
This is your choice and is usually determined by the type of music you want to play but there are other factors you should take into consideration ;
Electric:
1. Easier to play.
2. Thinner neck.
3. Lighter strings so easier on the fingers.
4. Quieter practice through headphones or un plugged.
5. Thinner body so easier to hold.
Acoustic:
1. Great tone unplugged.
2. No amp required.
3. Light to carry.
4. Great for the camping singalong!
If you would like to give the guitar a try we are offering an introduction lesson for free.
In this lesson we can discuss any other questions you have, give you the feel for the guitar and offer any advice on buying an instrument etc.

Don't let the local music shops die!
I often like to visit Jg windows in Darlington. Apart from the great staff that work there there's something more that stops me buying of Amazon or gear for music sites. If I'm choosing a guitar or pedal it's such a personal thing and from my experience no two are the same. You can take the same model and there's always a difference. I once worked in a studio with a famous producer and he ordered 10 Marshall cabs and about the same heads and every one sounded different. Were all looking for our own sound and buying a piece of musical gear should be like getting a suit fitted.
Another reason is a music shop is generally the music hub of a town so many contacts can be made and lots of advice to be gained. Iv picked up many gigs over the years through a chance meeting in a guitar store and it's a great place to find out who's playing local.
When I lived in London Denmark St was the place to hang out for gear and the gossip but now sadly it's been demolished to make way for the corporates to decide how we should spend our money and be entertained.
Next time your on the hunt for new guitar toys support your local store and craft your own identity through trial and error on the shop floor.
Hendrix would never have discovered Marshall on Ebay.
Happy strumming!
